The film begins when the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi is still named Shinmen Takezo. After being on the losing side of the Battle of Sekigahara, Takezo and his friend Matahachi manage to escape and come across a young woman named Akemi and her mother, Oko. Having taken an arrow in the leg, Matahachi is forced to stay behind with the women, and Takezo must return home where he discovers he's now a wanted man.
